If You Didn’t Control Your Future?

Alan Wilson Watts once said,”We are living in a culture entirely hypnotized by the illusion of time, in which the so-called present moment is felt as nothing but an extremely small hairline between an all-powerfully relevant past and an absorbingly important future. We have no present. Our consciousness is almost completely preoccupied with memory and expectation. We do not realize that there never was, is, nor will be any other experience than present experience. We are therefore out of touch with reality. We confuse the world as talked about, described, and measured with the world which actually is.”

Dear Favour, if you didn’t control your future, what would happen? What’s the worst that could happen? You’ve always been so controlling of certain situations but here’s the twist—there are just some situations that are beyond your control. You can’t control every outcome. Funny, trading is not so different you know. The reason for most of your fears and disappointments is because you are more focused on memories and expectations.

“Oh, yesterday’s trade was amazing”,”If only I can be a consistent trader”,”If this trade hit my target profit, i’ll be happy”,”I used to be profitable”,”If only I can make $100,000 a week”.. Do you see anything wrong with these sentences? These are all memories and expectations. Every moment in life is unique; so why waste time on something that’s gone or something that doesn’t even exist. Why not focus on what’s before you.

It’s mental how one can have expectations in life or even trading knowing that there’s no certainty. Nothing is certain! Like Alan said,”our consciousness is almost completely preoccupied with memories and expectation..” Indeed you have lost touch of your reality. Dear Favour, Do you even know what the true definition of mental illness is? I’ll let Shannon answer that on..

“The true definition of mental illness is when the majority of your time is spent in the past or future, but rarely living in the realism of NOW.” Maybe we are all insane then. I love this quote from Shannon Alder. It says,”We are all a little schizophrenic. Each of us has three different people living inside us every day—who you were, who you are and who you will become. The road to sanity is to recognize those identities, in order to know who you are today.”

I once asked you a question Favour. Do you know who you are? I remembered how you couldn’t answer that. you want to know why? You can never really know who you are if all you think about is who you’ll become. Did you get that? If you don’t understand that; then you’re really not on the road to sanity. In simple terms, “Who you were” is the past, “who you are” is the present, and “who you’ll become” is the future. So if you don’t know who you are then it just means you haven’t fully recognized these different identities. The most important of them all is the present (who you are).

What if you did things differently? What if you trade without expectations? What if you’re not thinking of the $20 you lost on that trade yesterday? What if you are not dreaming of what it will be like to be like those rich instagram trader, what if all you ever thought about is, “Who you are?”.

Oh, my dear Favour, What would happen if you didn’t control your future?
